Durian is known as the king of all fruits in Southeast Asia. It is widely popular in Malaysia as well as around the world. The durian derives its name from the Malay word “ duri ” meaning thorns; so named because the fruit is covered with sharp spines.
The durian fruit is made of two parts. Its outer covering is known as durian husk and its inner portion is referred to as durian flesh. Whereas the durian husk is inedible, the durian flesh is totally edible. This fruit is widely known for its distinct large size, formidable thorn-covered husk, and strong odor. The durian fruit may be round to oval and slightly smaller than a football.. It generally weighs around 1 to 3 kilograms.
The global demand for durian comprises the demand for durian in raw fruit form as well as durian based products. In 2019, the retail value of the demand in durian in raw fruit form (fresh, frozen, paste and pulp), domestically and internationally.

Frozen Whole Durian
A significant difference between Malaysian and Thai durian is that Malaysian durian is only harvested at 100% maturity and full ripening stage where the taste & quality profile is at its best.
Due to its uniqueness of harvesting at full maturity stage, Malaysian fresh durian does not have a long shelf life and this hampered its exporting potential.
However, this changed when durian packing facilities in Malaysia started to use cryogenic nitrogen freezing technology to retain its freshness of the whole durian after harvesting and they were able to extend the shelf life from 5 days to 18 months.
