Empty Fruit Bunch
EFBs are the leftover material from fresh fruit bunches after the fruit has been removed for oil pressing. Malaysia is the world's second-largest exporter of palm oil and generates large quantities of EFBs.
Empty fruit bunches (EFB) are valuable palm oil mill waste that could be used to produce multiple products in the form of energy, chemicals, and materials. Therefore, efficient utilization of these biomass resources is essential to optimize the profitability of the industry while addressing environmental issues.
EFB can be used as substrate for mushroom and fungus cultivation. As a substrate for mushroom or fungus cultivation, EFB is pressed in a rectangular block and mushroom or fungus to maintain moisture content and limit sunlight. The residue from mushroom and fungus cultivation is the composting EFB which can further be served as organic fertilizer. After a long duration of composting, the nutrients containing in EFB will substantially increase and benefits to the mushroom.
